Though the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment was started in 1921, it did not see action until World War II (due to being deactivated and reactivated several times) when the battalion deployed to Guadalcanal. At this time, during their first campaign, the war’s first Medal of Honor given to an enlisted man was earned by the 1st Battalion’s Sgt. “Manila John” Basilone. Before deactivation in 1947, the battalion participated in campaigns at Okinawa and Peleliu, then in North China. Not long after their inactivation, the Korea conflict broke out and the battalion was needed once again. In and around the fighting at Chosin Reservoir, two more 1st Battalion Marines would earn Medals of Honor. The decorations would not end there; 4 Presidential Unit Citation Streamers and 3 Meritorious Unit Commendations were earned during the team’s 5 years fighting in Vietnam. During Operations Desert Shield and Storm in Saudi Arabia, the team was the first to take up defensive positions before any other unit. The team occupied part of Mogadishu, Somalia, during Operation Restore Hope from 1992-93 before returning to Twentynine Palms. In the early 2000s, the 1st saw action in Iraq and Kuwait as a part of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom II, then again during Iraqi Freedom 05-07. In 2007, along with battalions of the Iraqi Army, the 1st captured over 100 insurgents and helped to prepare cities for the Iraqis’ eventual take over. A similar job of preparing Iraqi forces was done during another deployment to Karmah, Iraq, in 2009. In 2010 the team was sent to Okinawa to support the 31st MEU and remained until 2011 when it was able to return to Twentynine Palms.

The 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines started in 1925 and deactivated twice before World War II. After reactivation in the Philippines in 1941, the battalion fought with the 4th Marine Division in Corregidor, were captured by the enemy in 1942, and spent the rest of the war living as POWs which meant participation in the Bataan Death March as well. In 1952, after being reassigned to the 3d Marine Division, the battalion deployed to Japan and South Korea to assist in the release of prisoners in Inchon, then regrouped at Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii as the 1st Provisional Marine Air-Ground Task Force. The task force became the 1st Marine Brigade in 1956. 1965-69 saw a lot of action for the unit in Okinawa and then Vietnam. One of its companies was the last of the entire 3rd Division to leave Vietnam. During the 1980s, the battalion became a part of 2d Marine Division out of Camp Lejeune and was sent to Okinawa, then to the Mediterranean. 1987-88 included deployments to Korea, Puerto Rico, and Panama before another deactivation. 1994-2001 saw the battalion sent all over the country, as well as Korea and Okinawa, for training exercises and then return to Twentynine Palms to gear up for Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2003, as part of the Regimental Combat Team 7 (RCT 7), the battalion was the first of the Marines to enter Baghdad city and toppled the statue of Saddam Hussein. They earned their call sign “Darkside” around this time. During Operation Iraqi Freedom II in 2004, the unit participated in Operation Vigilant Resolve in Fallujah, then deployed again to Iraq during Op. Iraqi Freedom (05-07) in 2006-07, and in 2008 for Operational Overwatch while working with Iraqi security.
